2017/2018 Book Reviews

Well, folks! somehow this blog got lost and I had a heck of time getting it back, but here we are!. Here's the books that I read. You will notice also, I copied my amazon reviews and pasted here since I couldn't get into this site. So please scroll the whole thing. (and yes, I bought a barbie doll. Don't judge me!!) What's great about that, click on it and it will take you their amazon book!!

5 Stars for Monterey Pulp by Patrick Whitehurst. As a fan of film noir and those classic black and white Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone, I loved Monterey Pulp. Not only does it have that film noir feel, it also has those qualities that all made us fall in love with the works of Sir Arther Conan Doyle and his infamous Sherlock Holmes. Barker has that endearing intelligence to the border of genius style but chooses the fringes of society as his home rather than the upscale society a man with such intelligence would normally ascend to. I also thought the name of barker was a fantastic name for the character given the many meanings the word can take. The further you read into the book and are drawn into the case, the more tidbits are offered up regarding the lead. His instinct is sharp, refined, and works in a way the reader thinks they understand as far as Barker deciphering the mystery goes until he explains it and then a whole new word of possibilities in it. If you love a full-fledged rounded and intriguing lead character, a solid and insighful storyline full of depth and mystery, don't miss this book. You will be sorry if you do....

The Gaslight Girl, 5 stars. As an occasional fan of steampunk, I thoroughly enjoyed this retelling of the classic fairytale Cinderella and am looking forward to other books in the series. Set in Victorian London and filled with fabulous gadgets and machines, the reworked image of Cinderella named Halloran Frost fights for what is hers as danger lurks.

A Violet and Two Gentleman, 4 Stars.
Book Goddess Reviews. A tale of two loves, one dangerous and exciting, one mundane and extraordinarily safe, face Violet Bunton in this Victorian era romance.Written in a blend of modern writing with Victorian touches, it was a satisfying love story of a woman who finds life, and love, are far more complicated that she could possibly imagine.

Buried Alive by Jeremy Simons Book Goddess Review 5 Stars What would you do if the person you loved the most plotted your death and then followed through with it? What if it failed? What revenge would you exact? Read Buried Alive, a fine tale of horror, suspense and revenge that leaves you wanting more.

3 Minutes till Midnight by Hargrove Perth. If you loved Twilight, Vampire Academy or The Mortal Instruments... this book is sure to make you fall in love with it. Peculiar Morte is a sophomore at Moonlight Cove Academy which is in one of thirteen immortal friendly cities scattered around the world. She is destined to become a witch until she kisses Sebastian Williams, the vampire all the girls swoon over. That kiss changes not only her destiny but her entire family's. I hope there are many more books to come in this series. It touched on the angst, had laugh out loud moments, and left me wanting to read more.  5 stars

Cushion by Tamela Miles. This is a story of redemption, love, and learning how to trust each other when an evil could destroy both Natalie and Billy despite their feelings for each other and the fact that Billy feels as though he has known her before. A paranormal romance filled with thrilling twists and turns that won't disappoint. 5 stars

3 Kisses at Midnight by Hargrove Perth. What a fantastic set of YA novels. Book 2 picks up where book one leaves off, with the destiny of the Morte family hanging in the balance. Julia must find her strength, Lorelei pursues her own destiny, and Peculiar oversees it all as the loving vampire aunt of two mortal nieces. There's romance, suspense, laugh out loud moments that are sure to appeal to anyone who liked Vampire Diaries or Twilight (though I thought these books were much better than Twilight!) Research on lore was fabulous and spot on! I highly recommend the Moonlight Cove Series. 5 stars

The Torcian Chronicles
A Dangerous Spell could be one Wizard's undoing.
March 25, 2018 ***** Five Stars.
Format: Kindle Edition
The Torcian Chronicles is filled with relatable well rounded characters, especially Mesham, the aged wizard of the novel. A dangerous spell is required to save Torcia and it is not an undertaking that can be approached with disdain. The world created around the central figure, the wizard, is filled with creatures both malignant and beneficent, draws the reader into the fantasy landscape easily, allowing you to become immersed in the story, magic, and dangerous endeavor Mesham is forced to handle.

VALLEY FEVER BY CJ BAHR An amazing ride 5 stars Wow just wow. Jill is a woman of strength. She finds her confidence in a word that the rest of the human race has forgotten exists. Thomas becomes an unlikely ally though I wasnt sure if he was just after the story of a lifetime or if he had other reasons. Alden and his nemesis are exactly what I envisioned the Fae would be. It is a grit your teeth thrill ride right to the end. Fantastically written blending suspense, fantasy, touches of angst relieving humor Valley Fever is one book you don't want to miss or put down. I was so impressed by this author, I'm purchasing her other books.

the Accalia 4.5 Stars - a beautifully written paranormal romance that draws in from the first page, we discover the child Genesis and the perilous beginning to life she has, being placed in the care of Cammie as her mother is dying shortly after her birth. The storyline leads us to a prophecy, shows us the structure of the wolf pack, and how female werewolves do not exist... until now. Written in first person, so if you prefer third, know this ahead of time. (I always mention this, some readers are particular.) Her life is endangered when the truth is discovered. A satisfying page turner that I would recommend.
The Day I Saw a Hummingbird is a reminiscent and self delving retrospective of Oscar's life, a man born into slavery who finds his way to freedom. While this book could have chosen to follow the line of the haunting and excruciating life of a slave, it didn't. Instead the reader sees life through Oscar's eyes, the good and the bad of it, the triumphs and the heartbreaks, and the hardships and blessings he endures. This book is a book that stays with you, that calls to you long after you have laid it down to tend to life, that calls you back wanting to read until the last page. A true testament to the spirit of a man as you follow him through the life he remembers to his eventual freedom. Five well deserved stars!
